Ethics Policy

The MCHS Mustang Morning News is a public forum for student expression whose opinions do not necessarily represent those of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.

The Mustang Morning News staff believes that freedom of expression, within the constraints of relevance and commonly accepted journalistic practices, is essential to the functioning of a democracy, and to an academic institution, which provide a student’s first introduction to the functioning and values of democratic society.

The Mustang Morning News strives to present a fair and balanced view of a diverse array of topics relevant to the Mira Costa High School community.  It is the duty of the staff to examine and present a variety of views, provide accurate information, and avoid bias, actual or implicit.   It is also their duty to cover topics that may be challenging, and will not shy away from controversial subject matter.  In addition, the staff will avoid sensationalism and other methods not associated with professional journalistic standards.

It is through these efforts, in consultation with the Adviser, that the staff will maintain a high standard of journalistic integrity essential to the functioning of a professional news organization. Our staff is guided by standard journalistic ethics policies and legal guidance from organizations like the Student Press Law Center.
