If you live in the LA bubble, you probably think that the only street art there is is in Venice or Santa Monica. When in actuality, street art is a world wide form of expression to spread culture and flavor throughout a city. One place you would never think “street art” if you herd it, is Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv is a metropolitan city known for its beaches and buildings on Israel’s Mediterranean coast. But not many visitors know about its colorful and unique street art.
One street artist local to Tel Aviv is Rami Meiri. Rami has been using street art to express his feelings and ideas since the early 80’s. He is known for his bright, oversized murals that range from people to landscape. In most of his works, Rami has mastered the 3D effect, giving the feeling that his mural is just another part of the city, blending into its environment.
Now obviously a street artist cannot do what he loves without having a paying job. But for Rami, street art is his job. Along with painting murals for himself, he is flown all over the world and payed to paint murals in other cities. South Africa, Germany, and China are just three of the many countries where Rami has left his mark.
Over the past few years, Rami has introduced workshops to get the people in his community more involved in what he loves. In one workshop, you learn about his technique and get to paint, while listening to the history behind street art. After these workshops began, employees have gone out and painted their office walls, while students have decorated the buildings of their schools. He also opens these workshops to people visiting the country and includes a small tour around the neighborhood he lives in.
Rami has been doing what he loves the past 30 years, and plans to continue as long as he can.
