Every two minutes a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Meanwhile every October, the nation promotes the color pink as a campaign towards spreading breast cancer awareness with hopes of eventually finding a cure. Last month, the south bay took part in the cause with multiple businesses promoting pink, having proceeds from their profits being donated to local breast cancer charities.
Manhattan Beach Realtors like Caskey & Caskey started the “Why Pink” campaign during the month of October with a portion of their proceeds going towards Chemocessories. Chemocessories is a local charity based in Redondo Beach, CA and specializes in women’s wear such as turbans and jewelry made specifically for breast cancer fighters and survivors. The company believes that “If you look good on the outside, it will help you feel better on the inside, you will feel more self-confident.”
Other businesses like Union Pizza are working towards taking a bite out of cancer with their proceeds from fundraising going towards Walk With Sally. Nick Arquette founded the organization in 2005 after losing his mother at a young age to Breast Cancer. Throughout his childhood Nick faced difficulties growing up without his mother, whom he dearly loved by his side.
He was inspired to start Walk with Sally as a mentor program towards helping children and family members going through similar experiences of his own.
Local clothing store LF, located downtown Manhattan Beach, dressed their store in pink during the cause with proceeds going towards BCRF. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has raised more than half a billion dollars for lifesaving research. BCRF plans to award 48.5 million in annual grants to over 240 scientists from top universities and medical institutions around the globe.
Although a cure for breast cancer is yet to be discovered, with the strength and compassion that our community holds anything is possible.
