This year at Mira Costa, long term teacher absences are at an all time high. These absences can affect students’ ability to fully understand the set curriculum. Teachers go on long-term leave for a variety of reasons, including maternity leave or a personal health problem. Finding a substitute credentialed in a specific subject can be challenging. However, if a substitute is not familiar with the class, it can have a large effect on students ability to learn. Teachers spend time outside of the classroom on leave grading assignments and creating detailed outlines for their subs.
