According to The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, around 42.7% of people give more around the holidays than any other time of the year. In the South Bay, one of the major recipients of holiday donations is the Richstone Family Center’s Adopt A Family Program. Every December Mira Costa adopts between 20 and 30 of the 150+ familes from this Adopt a Family Program and gifts ranging from new clothes and pajamas to household items such as cleaning supplies. Both teachers and student-run clubs and organizations can adopt families or family members and go shopping for their gifts. Some teachers, such as Mrs. Nielsen and Mrs. Vaughan, decide that they best way to get their students involved is to take their students shopping for the gifts with them.
