Beach Volleyball started in the 1920s, and over the years, it has evolved from a party game into an Olympic sport. Every year, Manhattan Beach plays host to a stop on the AVP tour, the Manhattan Beach Open. This tournament has been played in Manhattan Beach since 1960, and it has given the city of Manhattan Beach an identity for beach volleyball. Winners of the tournament get their names placed on the Manhattan Beach Pier, on the “Volleyball Walk of Fame”. Past winners have include Kerri Walsh-Jennings, Holly McPeak, and Mike Dodd.
