H&M received backlash in January for airing an advertisement that was perceived as racist by consumers. The ad consisted of a black boy wearing a hoodie that said “coolest monkey in the jungle”. Angered South Africans took to the streets to protest, vandalizing stores and forcing them to shut down. This incident caused many shoppers to go somewhere else with their wallets, while others care more about the product and will continue to shop there.
