Parcel Tax
May 1, 2018
The Manhattan Beach Unified School District is facing a financial crisis: low funding. The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation is pushing for a Parcel Tax, which is a form of property tax placed on a unit of property, instead of assessing it based on the entire value of the property. This tax will go to fund K-12 education in the district.
California is currently ranked 44th in the nation for school funding, and 51st in student-to-teacher and student to counselor ratios. The district also does not qualify for Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) because the state allocates more money towards low-income communities and English Second Language (ESL) students.
