Homecoming and prom court are huge deals at Costa. The student body invests large amounts of time and energy into these institutions each year, and who makes the court and king and queen is always a huge topic of conversation. The culture and media that surrounds us tells us that prom and homecoming court are defining parts of our high school experience, of our journeys as young people. Imagine not feeling included in such major events in our community. This is the reality for members of the lgbtq community who don’t fit into the strict boy and girl categories that the court specifies. This issue becomes magnified when faced with recent statistics on youth and gender expression. A study from UCLA found that more than a quarter (27%) of adolescents in California express themselves in non gender conforming ways. Noah Ryang and Hunter Murray find out whats being done at Costa to help gender non conforming students feel included in prom and homecoming court.
