Reporter Notebook #3
Throughout my time this semester as a producer I have learned several things, not only of myself, but from those that I have worked with and interviewed for stories. One of my favorite discoveries was in my story about phone bans in California, I spoke with Richard Culatta who gave me awareness about how phones actually have a much larger role in our daily lives than we might suspect, and how we rely on them more than ever. To add onto this, I have learned many things about myself that surprised me. One of these things is how much I actually enjoyed filming the intros to each show. Although it was once a burden and felt like one of my many repetitive responsibilities as a producer, this process of meeting with the anchors, moving to different filming locations, and collecting b-roll actually gave me much enjoyment.
Despite these developments, I still have many things that I need improvement on and am unknowledgeable of. Many questions still remain unanswered from some of my past projects such as an explanation about the more psychological effects of cell phones and how they specifically affect the way our brains function. Additionally, there are many things I would want to improve on next semester. Specifically, I want to improve my writing skills and my story telling in my stories, which I think can really enhance my projects. Despite this, throughout my time as producer this semester, I have experienced a large improvement in the efficiency and quality of intros which I am super proud of, since the first cycle was extremely difficult and had many obstacles.

My Work:
- Phone Bans in California Schools
- This is a video news story that I was both the photographer and writer for and posted on September 19, 2024. With California signing off on a state wide phone ban in school districts, this story dives into how this will affect students and teachers and what it means to the future of education.
- What Now – Instagram Reels
- This post was a part of our weekly Instagram Reels series that recaps the local news. This post was for the week of September 13, 2024 and covered events including the ASB Spikeball Tournament, the Manhattan Beach Art Exhibition, and late registration to new classes. I produced this post, meaning that I managed the selection of the stories, the quality of each story, and editing them all together.
- Mustang Morning News 11-21-24
- This project was our monthly News Package which accumulated all of the stories that our staff worked on the work cycle prior. I was the Video Producer of this project, meaning I produced the stories, edited the final product, and filmed and organized the anchor intros. Posted on November 21, 2024, this package dives into the new MBUSD E-bike safety policies, how racism is reported in campus and if it is successful, why standard testing is decline and what it means for the school, and how the rules on attending football games have changed
