Over the February break, Ms. Howerton, Mr. Caine, and Mrs. Wachell brought 36 students on a trip through Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland. Nikki Killman and Grant Southwood tell us about their experience on the trip and what their favorite parts were!

Did you try any new food? If so, what?
Every meal we ate was new food for me. Mostly, our dinners consisted of a pork entrée with potatoes, salad or soup. The best new thing I tried was definitely the fried potatoes or the pork dumpling, but I also tried tomato soup, spinach dumplings, Wiener schnitzel, and black forest cake.
What were some new things that you learned?
Because the trip was based on historical sites of the Holocaust, I learned many new things. Before going on the trip, I didn’t know much about the concentration camps of Terazin and Mathhaussen and so I learned a lot about those. Terazin was definitely interesting and very sad because it was displayed as a community and Hitler succeed in manipulating the Red Cross into stating that the camps were treating humans humanely. Many of the facts about these camps, I learned during our visits.
Tell me your favorite memory of the trip.
My favorite memory of the trip was in Salzburg, Austria. It was freezing cold and we were granted free time. A small group and I debated on what to do and we decided on visiting the fortress. At first I wasn’t going to go because I thought we would have to hike to the top, but we found a shuttle so I went. When we got to the top, the view was absolutely beautiful because you could see the entire city. I had never seen anything like it and it was gorgeous.
Would you recommend others to go on the trip next year? Why or why not?
I would highly recommend going on this trip because I believe you get more out of this trip than you do any other. Not only do you visit four countries, but you visit historical sites that we learn about in school. In addition, the countries that we visited were beautiful. You also make a lot of new friends, and the new people I met definitely made the trip better. I wouldn’t trade this trip for any other and I highly recommend people choose this trip because it was one of the most fun things I’ve ever done.

What was your favorite city that you visited on the trip? Why?
“We took a walking tour of the city of Salzburg, Austria and this is a view from the river across from all of the cool buildings and the famous Hohensalzburg castle on top of the hill.”
“This picture was taken from the top of the Hohensalzburg Castle and gives a look at the entire new and old towns of Salzburg. This was one of the most amazing views that we came across on the trip.”
