Every year, the United States swears in around 700,000 new citizens. The path to citizenship is an extensive one, but many people choose to take the initiative to become US citizens for many benefits, such as the opportunity to vote. (To see a full list of benefits click here). Recently immigration has been a hot topic for debate in the United States, with bills such as Senate Bill 744 being introduced to Congress. Although this bill has not been put to an official vote, it is predicted in the Congressional Budget Office report that SB 744 could reduce the deficit by approximately $9 million.
