Once a month, two elected heads from each department would attend Council meetings and relay information back to their departments. Recently, the agenda focussed on making changes to the bell schedule, which led to dispute amongst the staff.
During the last Ed Council meeting on March 4th, Dr. Dale announced the administration’s resolution to abolish the Council, and the next morning, he sent an email out to the Mira Costa staff, confirming the decision. The decision was unexpected, and it caused speculation as to what the administration’s intentions were and led some to question their right to end the Council.
Although the Ed Council was comprised of about two dozen teachers, the recent decision to cancel further meetings has created a divide in nearly all staff members. Teachers have had varying responses, but only a minority choose to speak up in support of Dr. Dale.
In place of Ed Council, Dr. Dale has proposed two new groups, the Faculty Advisory Board and the Instructional Leadership Team, that he hopes will successfully take the place of Ed Council. They will be opened up to all staff members– not just department heads.
Still, some staff members are skeptical of what is to come in the future of this school’s democracy.

Thought this was an excellent, balanced piece. Kudos to the three of you. Sweet lord, do I look pale. Next time, I insist on some makeup prior to the interview. OK…not really.
