This year, Mira Costa’s administration blocked Snapchat from the school’s Wi-Fi due to its lack of educational value. Although some apps distract students from the learning environment, many apps are quite helpful. For example, apps like Edmodo and Quizlet were specifically designed for students and teachers. In addition, Facebook and Twitter allow students to spread ideas around the world in innovative ways. A PBS national survey stated that 71% of teachers promote social media and technology in their classroom, believing that it’s the most beneficial form of teaching. Social media is a valuable tool for students and teachers in school because it allows people to expand the classroom outside its walls.
