Teens have a lot on their plate. From homework to studying, to balancing extracurriculars and sports, there doesn’t seem to be any time for much else. This includes being informed on current events. Many teens simply do not care about informing themselves because they are “too busy”, “too tired” or lazy. These are all just excuses, and are not valid reasons. One main question asked is “why should I care?” Many of the issues do not seem to be directly affecting them, so this creates a lack of interest. However, it is SO important to be aware of current events. Recently, I think what happened at Ferguson proved why we need to be informed. The decision after the hearing sparked a debate and caused riots not inly in Ferguson, but across the nation. This outrage towards what seemed to be a race issue continued as the cop responsible for the death of Eric Garner was cleared of all charges. Why should you care about this? Well for one, the police treatment towards civilians, especially blacks, is under scrutiny, and you should have some sort of reaction to police brutality. The fact that the video of the NYPD cop chocking Eric Garner was still not enough evidence to indict him should make you frustrated. You should care about these issues because these are American citizens just like you, that are being unfairly harmed. You should care because this could happen to you. Or you should care because our country which preaches “liberty and justice for all” has clearly chosen to ignore what it stands for. The lack of justice in current events can make you want to change what’s going on, but in order for this to happen you have to be informed. Teens can make a difference with their opinions.
