The homeless population in Los Angeles County has risen by over 10% in the last six years to over 44,000 people. Particularly in the city of Los Angeles, This increase in the amount of people who are unable to afford to live in a home can be accounted to the recent progress of gentrification in LA.
Gentrification is defined as the process of rebuilding and reviving a city by bringing in new businesses and attracting individuals of higher income into underprivileged areas. Though this process is meant to increase the economic prosperity of a city, the negative impact can cause problems, especially for lower-income individuals.
We step out on the streets of Downtown Los Angeles to uncover the different hardships behind homelessness that can accompany gentrification in one of the largest cities in the country.
