LMU Students Live the Lion’s Code by being honorable, courageous, proud, wise, and bold. LMU CARES, the Campus awareness resource education services, strives to protect its students from sexual assault. It is not always possible to prevent this problem. LMU student Meghan Jonakis joined the LMU CARES program to advocate against sexual abuse after this topic hit close to home. Sophomore year a close friend of Meghan’s was raped. Consent is the willing participation or cooperation in act, behavior or attitude. But sex is not always consensual. Every year, 1 out of 4 women and 1 out of 7 men are sexually assaulted in college, and 90% of the victims had a previous relationship with their harasser. In April, LMU holds a clothes-line project, which is a worldwide program that Meghan helped bring to the LMU campus. It opens up the conversation about sexual misconduct and victims have the opportunity to tell their story by creating a tee-shirt. The color of each shirt has a different significance. Red, pink and orange represent those who have been sexually assaulted or raped. Blue and green represent victims of child sexual abuse, and purple signifies people who were assaulted due to their sexual orientation.
