If you wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning, odds are you have a job that requires you to do so. But most of the time people leave the house to fulfill that particular job. That isn’t the case for Manhattan Beach Mom, Becky Bruhns. But why is it that she has to wake up so early? The answer is, animals. Becky is a foster mom for puppies and kittens that belong to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (SPCALA).
Her job is to make these puppies and kittens more accustomed to humans and other animals. This isn’t very hard for her because she has two dogs, two cats, four fish, one iguana and 2 pre-pubescent daughters. The reason that SPCALA wants the kittens and puppies more accustomed to humans is because it is a very large adopting factor. A puppy that goes up to a potential adoptee will have a higher adoption rate compared to a puppy that would be scared and run away from the adoptee. Through house training and playing with Becky’s daughters, by the time that the animals leave the “boot camp” they are ready to become a member of a new family.
But that’s not all, she also uses the puppies and kittens for many other reasons. She has used these animals to teach her children lessons on how to let go of something even when you really love it, and also how to treat these animals with love and care. She can sometimes find homes for the animals before they even return to the shelter.
When asked why she does this, she said, “I do it because we love animals and we want to give back to society because we are fortunate to have all the things we have. It’s our way of giving back and helping creatures that don’t have anyone to take care of them and I want to do this until I’m old and can’t take care of them anymore.”
Needless to say that Mrs. Bruhns has a pretty hectic lifestyle and won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
