Throughout the election process, it seems as though every detail of President Donald Trump’s life was brought to the forefront. No stone was left unturned. Trump was well-known for many things before the election, such as running one of the most successful international conglomerates and being on the show The Apprentice, but here are five things that you may not have known about our next president.
1. He Has a Military Background
Donald Trump was sent to New York Military Academy at the age of thirteen. He was reckless as a child, and his parents hoped that sending him to military school would not only correct his behavior, but also put that energy toward success. Trump eventually reached the rank of Captain at the school before leaving for college. Trump says that through this experience, he gained more military training than a lot of the guys that actually go into the military.
2. He Owned a Football Team
Donald Trump bought the New Jersey Generals of the USFL back in 1984. The USFL (United States Football League) was a short-lived football league that somewhat rivaled the NFL for a period of time in the 1980s. Donald Trump owned the Generals for two years, and he tried to build up the USFL to rival the NFL. When TV ratings for the USFL fell far below that of the NFL, the league was forced to disband. So, even if it was just for two years, Donald Trump owned a football team.
3. This Isn’t His First Time Running For President
Donald Trump almost ran for president in 1998 and in 2012. He strongly considered running, but eventually decided against it. However, he did run in 2000 as a member of the Reform Party. He lasted only about a year in the campaign until he felt as though running in the Reform Party wouldn’t get him the kind of publicity that he needed to win the election.
4. He Doesn’t Drink Alcohol
Donald Trump’s brother, Freddy, died in 1981. Donald says that Freddy was an alcoholic and that he may have died from that. Trump has been sober ever since then and even claims that he has never drank alcohol in his life.
5. He Made a Special Appearance on One of your Favorite Cartoons
In 2000, Donald Trump appeared on an episode of The Simpsons. He appeared, oddly enough, as the President of the United States as he was pictured waving to people as he rode down an escalator. This video shows Donald Trump, after he announced that he would be running for president, riding down an escalator, a video eerily similar to the one that The Simpsons predicted fifteen years earlier.
