Nowadays, becoming a YouTuber is not the same as it used to be. If you want to be successful, there are many steps, requirements, and rules you must follow to acquire fame.
- Who are you?
- Before you become a YouTuber you have to decide what you want to do on your channel. Most people are beauty guru’s, gamers, etc.
- Be original- if you want you can just find a topic you feel strongly about and can talk about it in front of your camera.
- If you don’t want to be original in your topic, find a way to make yourself unique. There are eighteen hundred thousand other girls filming their “daily makeup routine,” so if you are too, why is yours special? Why should I click on your video and not someone else’s?
1. What do you need?
- A good camera– We want HD.
- A room with good lighting- Again. We want HD.
- Tripod– If you don’t have a tripod your camera will be uneven and shaky, and if you have shaky footage your videos will be unpleasant to watch.
- Any other things you may want in your video- it’s always good to have props to show your viewers so you can show them what you are talking about.
2. What do you record?
- You- We need to see your face so always start your video introductions with you summarizing what your video will be about.
- B-roll- for you non-broadcast journalism students, B-roll is extra footage you get to put over a voiceover/music/audio. You want to have LOTS of this. If you are teaching your viewers how to do something don’t just shoot yourself doing it. Get five different shots of you doing the same thing so you can have options when editing and it keeps the viewers interested, not only watching one continuous video. And remember kids: Artsy Angles Are Awesome.
- Have a “thing”- Whether if it’s your intro/outro or a common phrase you always use, have a “thing.” People like seeing you do something similar every video because, it makes them feel like they know you. Think about it. Can you imagine one quirky thing your best friend always does? Thats what you want in your videos. Be everybody’s best friend.
3. Editing
- When you are watching the footage you took, you’re going to want to keep everything, but you have to delete the stuff that isn’t top-notch.
- Short and Sweet- keep your videos detailed but too the point. Try not to exceed ten minute long videos. No one wants to watch the same thing for thirty-five minutes, they will click out of your video and move on. You want people to watch your video and then watch another one by you, then another, and another. Get people to watch and subscribe to you.
4. No-shame self promo
- Social media the heck out of your video- tweet the link, post the link on facebook, make your instagram website the link to your video, post a picture of your video on facebook and instagram, make a 6 second sneak-peak on vine, post the link on tumblr, email it to your mom, etc.
- Tell your friends- your friends will watch and recommend you to other people, so always let them know when you have just posted a video.
5. Last minute tips
- Always keep your viewers involved- it can be as easy as asking them questions and having them comment their answers, to doing giveaways, to having meetups.
- Make your videos timely- if some big thing happens in pop culture, make a video about it. Lots of people will be searching for that topic and they will click your video.
- The most important rule you must always follow is make videos about something YOU love. If your viewers happen to agree with you, awesome, but, the most important part is that you believe in everything you are putting on the internet. Never just make a video about something because everyone else is. Make it unique, make it interesting, make it you.
