“When he asked me if I wanted to help him do it, I said yes. He’s my best friend and we love making people feel happy.”
And just like that, two students created the viral Facebook page, Costa Compliments. With the Facebook page consisting of over 1,200 friends, its purpose is to post anonymous compliments on their page that have been sent in by Costa students.
“We sent friend requests to people from different grades and social groups so our closest friends wouldn’t know it was us, and within the next few days it just blew up…during the first week we received so many messages at once, that my computer kept crashing!”
As I sat down with this dynamic duo, they told me stories about how multiple people had sent them messages thanking them for creating this page and how it had helped them get through a dark time in their life.
“Both of us have received our own personal compliments from people, and the feeling you get from that is one that cannot be described. It’s great to know that we are making others feel that way as well.”
Although this Facebook page has evoked positive feedback, there have been some negative effects. Other Facebook pages have been created such as Costa Callouts and Costa Insults, which allow students to anonymously bully their peers.
“I don’t understand the reasoning these people have behind creating pages like this. It makes me feel horrible. High school is hard enough as it is…why are people trying to make it harder?”
“Every now and then, we will get that one message that is anything but a compliment. We know it when we see it, but all we can do is delete the message and move on.”
Regardless of the negative setbacks, Costa Compliments continues to bring our student body closer together. Their most recent public appearance occurred during finals week, when stickers with inspiring quotes were posted on every single locker across campus.
“Dr. Dale helped us post the stickers on all of the lockers the night before finals… it took hours and we were there very late at night! But it was all worth it when we saw the feedback we got on our page the next day.”
The two best friends are currently brainstorming possible ideas that they can use to pleasantly surprise the student body with in the future. They hope to continue the tradition of Costa Compliments for many years to come and have plans to pass on the Facebook page to reliable underclassmen, when the time is right.
Last but not least, to dispel any rumors out there…
“We have nothing to do with the Costa Compliments instagram or twitter page…We have nothing to do with Costa Shout-Outs or Deserved Costa Compliments…and no, we are not Ben Dale. He knows who we are.”
So, Costa, any ideas?
