Today, there are about 70 million stray animals in the United States. Of this 70 million, only about 6-8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters. The living conditions in these shelters are not always pleasant. Most animals shelters are dirty, and have a holding time of one to two weeks, which means these animals have such a short amount of time to get adopted or they will be euthanized. One of the main reasons that there are so many homeless animals is pet owners failing to spay and neuters their animals and prevent reproduction.
