Nowadays, Psy’s K-Pop hit, “Gangnam Style” has shaken up our culture in many ways, but in the sense of Korean food, it has been popular in LA for a while. Instead of originating from Gangnam, South Korea, BCD Tofu House originates from Buk-Chang-Dong, South Korea.
BCD serves everything from boiling hot “soon tofu” in a stone pot to Korean barbeque– they have quite an extensive menu, which caters to my family very well. Once ordering, you are served fresh, authentic Korean “ban-chan” side dishes, which very daily. Usually, you are served complimentary fresh fish, kimchi, pickles, spinach, and countless other small dishes, along with a stone pot of rice.
What BCD is most famous for, however, is their famous soon tofu. “Soon tofu” translates to “tofu soup” in English. It is a boiling hot soup with a pepper base and always has fresh tofu in it, and at BCD, it can be ordered in many different ways– with beef, pork, seafood, kimchi, dumplings, mushrooms, and more. You can also tone down the spice level, which is nice for me. In my family, their seafood soon tofu and their teriyaki chicken dishes have become absolute cravings. It is so unique and it feels great to break up the constant routine meals of fast food, sandwiches, or pasta. Trust me, I’m not one to be experimental with food, but despite how intimidating their dishes can look, they are consistently delicious.
BCD Tofu House has become a favorite restaurant for my family, not only because of their great food, but also because its a really healthy choice for dinner. Their tofu is 100% organic, and their food is cooked fresh daily. Many of the dishes they serve are vegetable or chile based, which are both basic ingredients for health. Finally, after having eaten a seafood soon tofu and their teriyaki chicken, the only fat consumed is from the teriyaki sauce and the carbohydrates from the rice. It is practically a perfect meal.
Their food isn’t just delicious– their staff serves it at a record pace comparable to that of any fast food restaurant you can even think of. The only waiting time is virtually nonexistent, except the wait to get into the restaurant at rush hour, but the line moves very quickly. If you would like to visit a BCD Tofu House, there are multiple locations in the Los Angeles/Southern California area. For more information, you can call 213-382-6660.
