Not only known for their fine teas and coffees, Urth Caffe is nothing less than exquisite for their meals as well. Located in Santa Monica, this caffe is the perfect get away and place to go for a more unique experience. Whether you go solo or are accompanied by some friends, this couldn’t be a more perfect place to get a well made meal at a low price. The first thing I noticed was the outside look of the caffe. A couple vines climb up the walls that are wrapped around lamps giving it an authentic feel. I first came into contact with was a friendly greeter who offered me a menu to look over. Displayed in categories, the menu helps to get the feeling across of an older different style caffe. Items of unique coffees and teas are exhibited across the back counter with a nicely laid out glass display of sweets in front. The perfect combination to a great meal right after those taste buds are satisfied. I was given a table number to be identified by and then given the option to sit outside in the back with a calming atmosphere near a mini waterfall, out front facing the ocean and commotion that passes by, or inside with the more “homey” feeling. Sitting outside is a perfect choice if the sun is shining and those summer clothes are in use. Having been here on multiple occasions, sitting inside is a great way to interact with people and all the friendly faces shown by the workers.
We chose to sit inside with a window view of the life going on outside. Just under 11 dollars, the Urth Quesadilla is served with a side of freshly made guacamole, diced tomatoes, and black beans. The quesadilla is made with grilled chicken, melted monterey jack cheese that is embedded in between a flour tortilla. Crisp on the outside, my teeth bit into the crunchy shell leaving my tastebuds beyond content. The juicy chicken leaves your mouth watering as you can’t get enough of it.
Wanting something a little more authentic? I would suggest the delicious, tangy Panini Roasted Turkey sandwich. Also under 11 dollars, this urth butter roasted turkey breast is melted with Jarlsberg swiss cheese. Want to spice it up a little more? Add the whole grain mustard sauce to get a little more pizzaz. I loved the combination of the poppy seed crusted honey wheat bread with the mustard sauce as it gave the turkey a lot more flavor and taste to it. If you want to change up your typical turkey sandwich, I’d go for this Urth special sandwich. If your stomach is still talking to you don’t worry just yet, as this sandwich comes with a spinach based salad on the side. With a layer of tangy, but sweet dressing, this salad does just the trick to finish off that delicious sandwich. It’s light texture won’t leave you feeling like you overdid it and are going to explode.
If you’re up for the challenge, I would suggest ending your fantastic meal with a little dessert. With a variety of cookies, cakes, and pies, Urth Caffe can’t let you walk out empty handed. As I ordered a slice of chocolate pound cake, my eyes became wide as it was topped with a chocolate creamy texture on top and shavings of more chocolate. Talk about a chocolate overload! You must have a sweet tooth in order to enjoy this heavily topped pound cake. As I was unaware of the portion that would be given to me, the server came out with not one, but three slices of this overwhelming sweet. Shocked and not ready to inhale this many calories, I was disappointed that I was not informed of the meaning of one slice. However, the display was very pretty as it had an orange slice nicely touching the side of one slice giving it a colorful look. The middle of the cake was moist but it was a little dry to say the least. My expectations for this was a little over the top just because it looked so appealing.
The atmosphere of the caffe is inviting and earthy, perfect for a lunch for two or more. Business hours are Monday-Thursday and Sunday from 6:30 am – 11 pm and Friday-Saturday from 6:30 am – 12 am. Its located at 2327 Main St, Santa Monica, CA
I highly recommend trying out this little authentic caffe!
